Dry Eye disease is one of the most common eye conditions, yet is often overlooked in routine eye exams. Optometry Australia reported that over 85% of Australians have experienced dry eye symptoms at some point, with 55% developing symptoms after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
At MST Optometrist, we are passionate about diagnosis and management of this condition to keep your eyes feeling comfortable and healthy.
Our new Dry Eye Clinic uses advanced diagnostic imaging to assess the type and severity of your condition using internationally recognised grading scales. Your optometrist will then create a personalised treatment plan using a combination of at-home and in-office therapies for optimal results.

Dry Eye can cause a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms, which can vary in severity. Common symptoms include:
Dry Eye is a multifactorial disease, meaning it can result from a combination of factors that disrupt the delicate balance of your tear system. It typically occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears (aqueous deficient), or the tear film is of poor quality and is unstable (evaporative). In many cases, Dry Eye is caused by a combination of both, where an imbalance in tear production and stability triggers a cycle of inflammation and further damage.
Common causes of Dry Eye include aging, environmental factors, prolonged screen time, and certain medications. It is also strongly linked to eyelid conditions like blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which impact the oil glands in the eyelids and compromise the tear film. Additionally, hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases, and allergies can worsen symptoms, making Dry Eye a complex and multifactorial condition that requires tailored care by an eye health professional.
